2006 Jeep Liberty Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Water Pump on 3.7L Engines on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: The water pump for 3.7L engines is bolted right onto the engine timing chain case cover. The first thing to do is take out the negative cable from the battery and empty the cooling system. On the water pump, unplug the fan/viscous fan drive assembly from the fan side without taking it off the car. Tool number 6094 is made to use when servicing these clamps and, in any case, remember to put on safety glasses. If you are replacing the water pump, be sure not to take off the fan blade assembly from the thermal viscous fan drive. Afterwards, take out both screws connecting the fan shroud to the radiator and unhook the coolant overflow hose. When you remove the top shroud and fan, set the thermal viscous fan drive assembly aside, but never place it horizontally, so no silicone fluid gets spilled. You should also disconnect the accessory drive belt, undo the clamp from the lower radiator and remove the lower hose at the water pump. When ready, remove the seven bolts attached to the water pump and the stud bolt near the oil pan, ensuring you don't pry the water pump at the timing chain case/cover to protect the machined areas. Once you have removed the water pump and gasket, use clean tools to clean the surface where the gasket meets without harming it. Check the pump assembly for breaks, seal leaks, rough or movable shaft bearings, rubbing impeller against the pump body or touching the timing chain case/cover. Clean the surfaces where the gasket fits and the pump will sit, put the new gasket in place, install the pump and while holding a socket and ratchet, tighten the bolts until they reach 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.)-be careful not to over-torque them. Check if the pump impeller isn't touching the timing chain case/cover, then fit and tighten the lower radiator hose and loosen the belt tensioner before putting on the new drive belt, to prevent the engine from running hot. Slide the upper fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly together to securely link the upper and lower fan shroud pieces for smooth airflow through the radiator. Place the fan shroud-to-radiator linescreen screws into each hole and ensure the fan blades have a gap of at least 1.0 inches from the fan shroud, then add the fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to the water pump shaft. Top up the cooling system, attach the negative battery cable, start the engine and see if any leaks appear.
