The Water Pump in Jeep Liberty vehicles is an important gadget that helps to pump water from the radiator to the engine where through, it is heated by hot gases from the combustion chamber. Today's water pumps are generally produced using aluminum and are operated via a belt from the crankshaft; however, electric water pumps are increasingly commonplace. Powerful pumps are used for circulating coolants through the engine's passages and include a rotating shaft with an impeller on its one end. Some indicative signs that the water is all pumped out are coolant leaks, sounds coming from worn bearings, and over heating of the engine. High-performance water pumps can be acquired for high-performance engines transferring more coolant flow and utilizing less power than stock pumps. The parasitic power loss by mechanical water pumps can also be eliminated by using electric water pumps while also providing extra cooling.

Jeep Liberty Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Water Pump on a 2.4L Engine on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
To work on and repair the water pump of a 2.4L, disconnect the negative battery cable and lift the car using a hoist. Take out the belts on the accessory drive, the Belt Tensioner and drain the coolant. Following that, disconnect the generator, Power Steering Pump, A/C Compressor and accessory drive bracket, before taking out the Timing Belt and idler pulley. Insert adaptor C-4687-1 into the camshaft sprocket after using Special tool C-4687 to hold it, remove the bolt and after that, remove both the cam sprockets and the timing belt rear cover. Look for cracks, leaks at the shaft seal, unstable bearings and impeller rubbing against the pump assembly or the timing chain case or cover. During installation, put the O-ring gasket properly in place in the correct groove inside the water pump, to avoid any coolant leaks. Join the block with the pump body by tightening the screws to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.), then use 103.4 kPa (15 psi) pressure to look for leaks along the water pump shaft seal and O-ring. Turn the pump by hand to ensure it swivels freely and afterward fit the timing belt rear cover. Torque the camshaft sprockets and target ring bolts to the proper value, while keeping the camshaft sprocket immobile with Special tool C-4687 and adaptor C-4687-1. After that, secure the timing belt idler pulley and tighten the bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft.-lbs.), then put in the timing belt. Put back the accessory drive mounting bracket, power steering pump, generator, A/C compressor, belt tensioner and the accessory Drive Belts. Next, add the coolant to the cooling system, bring the vehicle down and attach the battery cable again.
  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Water Pump on a 3.7L Engine on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
To replace the water pump on 3.7L engines, first wipe any dirt off the areas where the pump meets the engine. With a new gasket between them, raise the water pump into place and fix the mounting bolts until they reach 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) torque. Make sure the water pump spins smoothly and its impeller does not touch the timing chain case/cover. Connect the lower hose of the radiator to the water pump and, next, install the Drive Belt for accessories. Join the upper and lower parts of the fan shroud and mount the fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly so no air from your radiator is blocked. Place the two screws through the shroud and the radiator, then ensure at least one inch (25 mm) space exists between the tips of the fan and the shroud. Let all the air out and, when done, connect the battery's negative cable. It's also important to inspect the cooling system for any leaks.
