To work on and repair the water pump of a 2.4L, disconnect the negative battery cable and lift the car using a hoist. Take out the belts on the accessory drive, the
Belt Tensioner and drain the coolant. Following that, disconnect the generator,
Power Steering Pump,
A/C Compressor and accessory drive bracket, before taking out the
Timing Belt and idler pulley. Insert adaptor C-4687-1 into the camshaft sprocket after using Special tool C-4687 to hold it, remove the bolt and after that, remove both the cam sprockets and the timing belt rear cover. Look for cracks, leaks at the shaft seal, unstable bearings and impeller rubbing against the pump assembly or the timing chain case or cover. During installation, put the O-ring gasket properly in place in the correct groove inside the water pump, to avoid any coolant leaks. Join the block with the pump body by tightening the screws to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.), then use 103.4 kPa (15 psi) pressure to look for leaks along the water pump shaft seal and O-ring. Turn the pump by hand to ensure it swivels freely and afterward fit the timing belt rear cover. Torque the camshaft sprockets and target ring bolts to the proper value, while keeping the camshaft sprocket immobile with Special tool C-4687 and adaptor C-4687-1. After that, secure the timing belt idler pulley and tighten the bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft.-lbs.), then put in the timing belt. Put back the accessory drive mounting bracket, power steering pump, generator, A/C compressor, belt tensioner and the accessory
Drive Belts. Next, add the coolant to the cooling system, bring the vehicle down and attach the battery cable again.
