2006 Jeep Wrangler Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What is the Proper Way to Install a Piston Ring Set on 2006 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Ensure that the manufacturers I.D. is facing upwards when you set the piston ring onto the piston. The order for installation is as follows: first put on the oil ring expander, then the upper oil ring side rail, the lower oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and lastly the No. 1 upper piston ring. For the side rail, put the end over the piston ring groove and press it down into place against the expander while pressing until it fits, but do not let the piston ring expander touch it. The first rail you place should be the upper side rail, with the lower rail added afterwards. At this stage, hang the No. 2 piston ring and then the No. 1 piston ring. The piston ring end gaps should be placed correctly, with the oil ring expander gap left at least 45° away from the side rail gaps and not near the piston pin center or pushing direction, because having gaps staggered helps control the oil better.
