2007 Chrysler Aspen Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Check and Install a Piston Ring Set on 2007 Chrysler Aspen?
A: Wipe the center of the cylinder bore clean to check the ring clearances, then insert a used or new ring, holding it 12mm (0.50 inch) from the cylinder bottom. Position the ring in the cylinder, slide it with a piston to make sure it is squared and check its end gap with a feeler gauge-replace rings that are too thick or thin. After cleaning the piston ring grooves and making sure they don't have any nicks or burrs, measure the ring side clearance and if any ring fails specification, replace it. Turn the ring on the piston to observe that it rotates smoothly inside the groove. Because No. 1 and 2 piston rings look different, the No. 2 one should have its manufacturer's Dot mark pointing up towards the top of the piston. Start by putting the expander ring, then the upper oil ring side rail, next the lower oil ring side rail and finally both No. 2 and No. 1 upper piston rings. The first step is to install the oil ring expander, then set one end of the upper side rail into both the groove of the piston ring and the expanded expander, press it until it's sitting snugly and do the same for the lower side rail. Use the piston ring installer to help you fit the No. 2 intermediate ring and the No. 1 upper ring onto the piston. Place the piston ring gap away from the opposite piston pin center and at least 45° from the side rail gap.
