2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Axle Beam Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Beam on Rear Disc Brake on 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: To service the axle beam of a rear disc brake car, first put on the trailing arm forward bracket on both sides by placing it above the axle trailing arm bushing and matching the bracket's hole with the center hole in the bushing. Insert the thru-bolt through the bracket and bushing so that the threaded parts stay away from the vehicle body before installing the axle. Put the nut on the bolt at the inside end and fasten it until you notice a little resistance, but don't close it completely until the vehicle is as tall as the curb. Line up the center of the axle beam under the transmission jack while it is at axle removal height and then raise the trailing arms to align the bracket marks with those you marked during the removal. Place and screw the eight bolt-to-body mounting bolts until they are finger tight. Line up the brackets with the scribed marks and tighten all bolts to 54 Nm. Add a rubber isolator to each end of the springs, so that each butts against the coil's flat section, then fit the springs above the perches in the proper direction alongside the axle. With the spring helper inserted, turn the spring coils until the flat ends of each upper spring line up with a straight line running near the axle beam and touching the outer edges of the vehicle. Move the transmission jack so the coil springs settle into the mounting brackets and then continue raising to make sure the shock absorber bolts can fit into the axle brackets and lower mounting eye holes. Attach the washer and nut to each of the shock absorber lower mounting bolts, tightening each one to 88 Nm. Remove the jack and insert the lower parts of both stabilizer bar cushion retainers into the rear slots on the axle, then turn the other parts up to put in the bolts and tighten each to 61 Nm. Make sure the bell crank is upside down and after installing the watts links and attaching it to the axle with a bolt, washer and nut, tighten everything to 149 Nm. Fit the spindle, seal and disc brake adapter on the axle end, clean the bolts you will bolt the assembly to, use Mopar Mounting Adhesive or a similar product and tighten the four bolts until they reach 95 Nm. Attach the wheel speed sensor head to the disc brake adapter of these vehicles and secure it with a mounting screw tightened to 12 Nm. Use routing clips to ensure the sensor is sited correctly and secured to the axle and trailing arm. Pass the parking brake cable into the hole in the trailing arm, make sure the routing brackets are straight and lock the brackets with bolts at 11 Nm. Pull the locking fingers outwards, insert the parking brake cable to the disc brake adapter, then fit the parking brake shoe actuator lever and assembly onto the adapter, install the shoe hold-down clips and lastly set the upper return spring. Fit the hub and bearing onto the spindle, fit a new hub nut, tighten to 217 Nm, fit the hub and bearing dust cap and brake rotor and lastly, install the caliper and tighten its guide pin bolts to 22 Nm. Connect the flex hose to the axle, fit the wheel and tire in place and tighten the nuts that hold the wheel to 135 Nm. Drop the vehicle so the rear wheels almost touch the floor and then attach the rear parking brake cables to the equalizer on the parking brake lever output cable, being careful not to hurt yourself while it adjusts automatically. Verify cables on the equalizer are properly installed, remove the pin tool from the parking brake lever, allow automatic adjustment by cycling the lever, check that the cables are positioned and make sure the rear wheels can rotate unaided. Be sure to lower the vehicle, fit the center console, use the parking brake, delete tire blocks, negative cable the battery.Fit the air cleaner cover, pump the brake pedal to ensure firmness, put the vehicle on a rack and tighten the pivot thru-bolts on the trailing arms. To complete rear wheel alignment, adjust the thrust angle by releasing the bolts on the axle trailing arm bracket and adjusting the axle as needed also known as shifting it forward or backwards.
