2007 Dodge Durango Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Check Clearances and Install a Piston Ring Set on 2007 Dodge Durango?
A: Before installing used or new rings, it is important to inspect their clearance. Do this by wiping the inside of the cylinder clean and pushing the ring in, positioned so that the ring gap measurement is made with the ring at least 12mm (0.50 inch) above the bottom of the cylinder. Be sure to use a piston to help guide the ring into the cylinder and then check its end gap with a feeler gauge (1). If the rings do not meet specification, they should be replaced. Before measuring, confirm that the ring grooves are clear and free of any damage, match a properly sized feeler gauge (1) between the ring land and the ring and change out any rings outside their specifications. Circle the ring and piston round and round, ensuring that it moves freely in that groove and that the No. 2 ring is fitted so its dotted side faces the top. Put the piston rings together: oil ring expander, upper side rail ring (number 1), lower side rail ring, intermediate ring number 2 and upper piston ring number 1. The first step is to fit the oil ring expander, then fit the upper side rail so that one end is between the oil ring and the expander, press down hard until it's in position and do the same for the lower side rail. Place the end of both the No. 2 intermediate piston ring and the No. 1 upper piston ring opposite the expander ring end, keeping a 45 degree gap between them and the side rail positions, while avoiding installation at the piston pin center or down the thrust direction.
