2006 Dodge Durango Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Check Clearances and Install a Piston Ring Set on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: For used rings, wipe the cylinder clean, then place the ring in the bore with a gap of at least 12 mm (0.50 inch) from the bottom of the bore. Check the gap as you install new rings too, before starting the engine. Square the ring by slowly lowering it into the cylinder, using a piston to do so. Check the ring end gap with a feeler gauge and change any rings that are out of range. If you find nicks or burrs in the grooves for the rings, clean them before checking the ring side clearance. Spin the ring around the piston to see if it moves smoothly and then set the No. 2 ring with the manufacturer's mark (Dot) facing up towards the top of the piston. Place the piston rings in the engine in order: oil ring expander, upper oil ring side rail (1), lower oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. Start by installing the oil ring expander, then fit the upper side rail so one end goes between the expander ring and the piston ring groove, push it down with force, repeat this for the lower side rail and tighten all bolts. Use your piston ring installer to put in the No. 2 intermediate piston ring and the No. 1 upper piston ring. Place the piston ring end gaps so the expander ring gap is at least 45° from both side rail gaps and keep them away from the piston pin center and in thrust directions.
