2007 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Piston's Connecting Rod on 2007 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: Before replacing the connecting rod, unhook the negative battery cable and get rid of the cylinder head. After lifting the vehicle on a hoist, eliminate the oil pan along with the oil pump pickup tube. After you put a ridge reamer on the first end of the main bore and twirl it clockwise, remove the pistons while keeping the tops of each piston covered. Each connecting rod must be rotated with the crankshaft and removed from above after every piston comes out of the cylinder block, without damaging the crankshaft journals. Once the old part is off, put on the bearing cap of the corresponding rod and mark each piston with its cylinder number. First, hold the connecting rods in a soft jawed vice for safety, remove the two snap rings holding the piston pin, then gently push the piston pin out of both the piston and connecting rod. For piston ring removal, mark the top and second rings so their IDs point toward the crown, then use proper ring expanders to take out the top and second rings, followed by the upper oil ring side rail, the lower oil ring side rail and lastly the oil expander from the piston. After that, make sure the tops, sides and small recesses of the pistons are clean, along with the oil control ring groove, so that its holes remain open.
