2007 Jeep Commander Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Check and Install a Piston Ring Set on 2007 Jeep Commander?
A: Be sure to wipe the cylinder bore, insert the ring halfway into the cylinder as you measure its gap and check that the ring is 12 mm (0.50 inch) above the bottom of the cylinder bore before installing any new or used rings. Slide the ring down into the cylinder using a piston and then measure its end gap with a feeler gauge; if a ring does not pass the measurement, replace it. Once you have cleaned the grooves, check the ring side clearance. The feeler gauge should be able to slip snugly in between the ring land and the ring. Any ring that's not within spec remains to be replaced. Rotate the piston ring to verify it rolls freely in the groove and remember to have the Dot mark from the ring on the manufacturer's side (up) facing the top of the second piston. Put the piston rings together as follows, from top to bottom: oil ring expander, top oil ring side rail (1), bottom oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. Make sure the oil ring expander is on, then put one end of the upper side rail between the piston ring and the expander, hold it down and slowly insert the rail down the piston. Do the same for the lower side rail. Install the No. 2 intermediate piston ring and the No. 1 upper piston ring with a piston ring installer, making certain that the gaps in their end expansions are at least 45° away from those in the side rail and position them so they are not in front of the piston pin or thrust center.
