2007 Jeep Compass Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Extract the Crankshaft from the Engine Assembly on 2007 Jeep Compass?
A: You should first remove the engine from the vehicle and then separate the transaxle from the engine, before taking the crankshaft out. After that, take out the flex plate/flywheel (1) and the rear (external) crankshaft oil seal. Right after that, you should separate the engine from the lift chain and mount it on a stand, then remove the engine oil and its filter. In addition to the engine, remove the crankshaft vibration damper (2), water pump pulley (3), engine mount support bracket (1) and oil pan (2). After that, detach the timing chain cover and chain, then keep going with the balance shaft module and crankshaft sprocket (1). Remove the crankshaft position sensor retaining bolt (1) to remove the sensor (2) and take the ladder frame off afterwards. Should you need a new piston or connecting rod, the cylinder head will have to be disconnected. To prevent damage, do not use a number stamp or punch for connecting rods, but mark with a permanent ink or paint marker the cylinder number on each rod and cap. Both covers and bolts affecting the connecting rod must be removed very carefully and the bolts should never be used again. When you finish, the caps over the main bearings must come off and you should lift the crankshaft from the cylinder block with great care to keep the main bearings and journals safe.
