Q: How to Remove a Shock Absorber from a Strut Assembly on 2008 Chrysler Pacifica?
A: You must take the strut assembly off the vehicle before disassembling it. Take advantage of a Strut Spring Compressor or PSE product 223-7400 or the equivalent to compress the coil spring, according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Take care to compress the spring and release its tension in the upper mount and pivot bearing by turning the adjuster clockwise before removing the strut shaft nut. Place the strut assembly in the strut coil spring compressor so that the lower hooks are secured on the coil spring first and then the upper hooks. Press the coil until there is no tension left on the upper mount. Remove the strut nut with a Strut Nut Wrench, Special Tool 6864, then place a socket over the hex at the strut shaft's other end and install it. Keeping the strut shaft still so it will not spin, take the nut off. After that, remove the upper mount from the strut shaft. Take off the pivot bearing from its position on top of the upper spring seat when servicing it. For upper spring seat or isolator servicing, first take the coil spring out and then remove the bare seat from the isolator. Lift the clamp from the coil spring at the bottom and pull out the strut through the bottom of the coil assembly. When you find the coil spring requires servicing, first lift the pivot bearing, upper spring seat and isolator from the coil. Notice the position of the end of the lower spring coil before taking it out from the compressor. Back off the compressor drive to release the tension in the coil spring, pull the upper hooks back and take out the spring. Pull the entire dust shield and jounce bumper assembly trom the strut, as you cannot disconnect them until they are taken off the vehicle. Collapse the dust shield to help you free the jounce bumper. Get rid of the spring isolator on the lower spring seat in the strut. Look at the strut assembly's components for binding, cracks, distortion, stress cracks, wear, deterioration and any signs of damage on the strut, upper mount, upper seat, spring isolators, coil spring, pivot bearing, dust shield and jounce bumper. If you notice any issues, replace those components.
