2008 Dodge Caliber Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install and Align a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2008 Dodge Caliber?
A: First, turn the stabilizer bar up and fit the rack and pinion onto the crossmember. Attach the rack and pinion to the crossmember by putting in two bolts and tightening them until the torque shows 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.). Carefully fit the floor mats in the car as well as possible and adjust the power steering rack and pinion so it stays centered when you turn the vehicle. While doing the reverse of removing, keep in mind that the front suspension crossmember should be attached to the body in the same spot where it was when you took it off. With a transmission jack, place the crossmember where the body's marks direct. Once the seat is placed, position and install the seals on the dash panel and use four mounting bolts to secure the front crossmember to the body, tightening everything to 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.). Cut out the transmission jack and fit retainers to the stabilizer cushions, then fasten them to the retainer with four screws tightened to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). Link the hose routing clamps to the crossmember with bolts and use a new push clip or screw on the left, applying tightening force of 8 Nm (71 in. lbs.). Hook the pressure hose to the rack and pinion, tightening its tube nut until it reads 32 Nm (24 ft. lbs.) and then secure the return hose, turning the tube nut to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Install the heat shield and attach it to the crossmember with three screws-tighten all the screws except the rear one which must be tightened strongly. Secure the front engine mount with the through-bolt and the rear engine mount as well. If you have the belly pan, install it on the engine. Be sure to inspect the tie rod seal boot before attaching the outer end of the tie rod to the knuckle, as you should change the outer tie rod end if it is damaged. Place the outer tie rod end into the knuckle arm and then place a new mounting nut on the stud. Tighten this nut to 132 Nm (97 ft. lbs.). Install the tire and wheel assembly, snug the wheel nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), then bring the vehicle down and take off the steering wheel holder. Set the front wheels straight in front, position the intermediate shaft in the center over the rack and pinion pinion shaft and slide it on the pinion shaft. Turn the steering wheel around 90° to make it easier to insert the intermediate shaft coupling bolt and make sure to tighten that bolt to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.). Strong BlueLine Loan Move the floor carpet, adjust the steering wheel so it is straight, bleed and check the power steering, inspect for any leaks and adjust the front wheel toe as required.
