2009 Dodge Caliber Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2009 Dodge Caliber?
A: To get the rack and pinion out, start by scooping up most of the power steering fluid in the pump first. Realign the floor carpet and tilt the column resting on it, to be able to see the shaft coupling right below the column. Guide the front wheels forward, then turn the steering wheel right to loosen and remove the bolt between the base of the column and the rack and pinion shaft without lifting the intermediate shaft. Put the front wheels and the steering wheel straight ahead, then lock the steering wheel in place with a steering wheel holder. Support the vehicle, remove the mounting nuts and then lift out the whole tire and wheel unit. Using Remover, Special Tool 9360, remove the outer tie rod end at the knuckle from the nut on both sides. Only if equipped, take off the engine belly pan. Pull out the rear engine mount and then pop the front engine mount through-bolt loose. Screwdriver to the three screws holding the heat shield to the crossmember and then take out the heat shield. Cut the connecting hoses and the clamps at the rack and pinion, then take out the screws joining the bushing to the crossmember. Take out the two stabilizer bushing retainers. Place marks on the body at every mounting bolt to guide your fitting of the new front crossmember. First, stabilize the front crossmember using a transmission jack and next take off the nuts on each mounting bolt. Raise the engine block and remove the crossmember enough to reach the top shaft at the pinion. Release the nuts from the coupling and slide it off the pinion. When necessary, remove both the dash seals and the bolts holding the rack and pinion to the crossmember. Turn the stabilizer bar up to detach the rack and pinion from the car and then pull the rack and pinion from under the crossmember.
