2008 Dodge Dakota Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Clock Spring Assembly on 2008 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before handling the Clock Spring Assembly, first disconnect the battery negative, wait two minutes and then reconnect it to discharge the SRS system. The Clock Spring should be in the middle between the steering wheel, steering shaft and steering gear, since misalignment can cause harm. The Clock Spring replacement part is shipped pre-centered and with a locking pin that shouldn't be removed until it's installed on the column. Be sure that the front wheels are pointing straight before you begin. Grasp the central rotor and case and do not move them as you gently slide the Clock Spring over the upper shaft of the steering column. Place the hole in the locating tab on the Clock Spring case over the locating pin on the multi-function switch mounting housing, then install and tighten the two screws holding the Clock Spring to the housing to 2 Nm or 20 in. lbs. Link the second pair of instrument panel wire harness connectors to the receptacles found on the back of the Clock Spring housing, put the lower shroud over the steering column and secure the lower shroud with the center screw to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.) Place the upper shroud on the lower shroud so the gear shift lever gap hider snaps into place, snap the shrouds together and use two outboard screws to secure them with a torque of 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). The tilt steering column knob goes on top of the tilt adjuster actuator and you should tighten the screw to a torque of 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Once you install a new Clock Spring, be sure to take out the plastic locking pin so the escapement stays aligned. Before bolting the steering wheel, make sure that the yellow rubber booted engagement dowel rests between the fins of the steering wheel armature hub on the Clock Spring rotor. Rehang the steering wheel, make sure all the steering wheel wire harness connectors are routed safely, fit the driver air bag and place the negative battery cable back in the last step.
