2008 Dodge Nitro Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Remove and Replace a Passenger Air Bag on 2008 Dodge Nitro?
A: The first step is to turn off the SRS by disconnecting the negative battery cable, letting the system's capacitor discharge for two minutes. To avoid hurting yourself with possible irritants in the air bag unit, cover your hands with rubber gloves, shield your eyes and put on a long-sleeved shirt. Remove the cover on top of the instrument panel first. Then, take out the two screws from the guide on top of the instrument panel by the windscreen that join the passenger air bag bracket with the dash panel. Separate the air bag instrument panel from the vehicle structure by carefully using a trim stick or suitable tool to pull away the screw guide from the instrument panel and disengage the integral latch system. Go to the rectangular hole in the top of the instrument panel under the screw guide that was removed and take out the screw holding the center tab of the passenger air bag instrument panel bracket to the structural duct. Take the glove box out of the instrument panel and pull the two nuts, one on either side which secure the passenger air bag lower studs to the instrument panel base trim, through the upper glove box opening. Gently pull the lower edge of the passenger air bag door backward, away from the car, releasing the snap features from their spots on the instrument panel. Simply pull the door open and move the air bag backward to uncover the wires that connect the instrument panel to the air bag inflators at each side. With one hand, carefully press down the latches on the passenger air bag wire's connector and then pull straight out the insulators at the end of the wire with your other hand. After that, take out the passenger air bag, air bag door and instrument panel bracket together from the instrument panel.
