Begin by disconnecting and isolating the car's negative
Battery Cable to stop its Supplemental Restraint System and after two minutes, remove and change the driver air bag module. Cover your hands with rubber gloves, put on some eye protection and work while wearing a long-sleeved shirt to prevent getting hurt by deposits in the cushion. If you find that your air bag is either not deployed or appears to be ineffective, act according to the recommended steps for supplemental restraints that did not open during the crash. If your air bag has activated, see what steps to follow for service after deployment before you remove it. Move the
Steering Column as low as possible to reach it more easily. Use the
Steering Wheel to place all three access holes for the air bag retainers directly in front of you. Place the short handled, flat-bladed screwdriver into any upper access hole, ensure the blade is on the inside of the wire loop, turn the handle to release the snap retainer and slowly pull the driver air bag back. Do the same for the second upper access hole and for the special lower access hole that looks like a V. After you pull aside the air bag, reach the electrical connectors at the rear of the air bag housing, making sure not to touch the Clock Spring pigtail wires or press on the connector insulator. Lift the retaining lock straight up and pull to remove the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail. Then take out the insulators on the air bag inflator connector receptacles. Finally, pull the driver air bag off the steering wheel. Should the steering wheel air bag deploy, first replace the Clock Spring and then inspect the steering column.
