2008 Jeep Commander Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install the Alternator for the 3.7L, 4.7L, and 5.7L Engines on 2008 Jeep Commander?
A: For the 3.7L and 4.7L engines, fit the generator on the engine, then attach 2 horizontal bolts and 1 vertical bolt and tighten them all to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm). Attach the connector end of the field wire to the rear of the generator, then put in the B+ terminal eyelet on the output stud, tightening the nut to 108 in. lbs. (12 Nm). Do not press a screwdriver into the rim of the pulley to insert or pull out the belt, since this may break the belt. Route the serpentine accessory drive belt correctly, since making a mistake can cause the water pump to rotate backward and the engine to overheat; follow the guide in the engine compartment. Now, attach the generator drive belt and then put the negative battery cable into the battery. Place the generator at the location on the 5.7L engine, secure it with 2 mounting bolts and tighten them to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). Put the field wire connector in the rear of the generator, fit the B+ terminal eyelet onto the generator's output stud and tighten the nut on that stud to 108 in. lbs. (12 Nm). Repeat those steps to carefully mount the belt, install the drive belt and attach the negative battery cable to the battery.
