- Q: How to Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 3.7/4.7L Engines on 2008 Jeep Commander?A: To work on the starter motor of 3.7/4.7L engines, remove the negative battery cable and then use jack stands to hold up and support the vehicle. When the vehicle has 4WD, take out the front drive shaft. If a 4WD vehicle has a certain transmission, its support bracket lies between the front axle and the transmission side; take out the two bracket bolts on the transmission and slightly pull the bracket up to access the starter mounting bolt from below. When you have an automatic transmission, take out the two bolts connecting the starter motor to the car. Ensure the pinion housing clears the upper housing, so keep the starter motor tilted forward as you do so by supporting it, not suspending it from the wiring harness. Pull down on the solenoid end of the cable and carefully rock down the starter to reach the battery terminal nut. Then, after removing the battery positive cable wire harness connector eyelet from the solenoid battery terminal stud and the connector from the solenoid terminal receptacle, take out the starter motor.
