  A: Prior to servicing or repairing the alternator, you should disconnect the negative cable from the battery to protect yourself. After you have isolated the negative battery cable, take out the drive belt for the generator and be careful not to push the belt over the pulley rim with a screwdriver, so as not to harm the synthetic fiber. Remove and reinstall the serpentine belt to its proper position to keep the water pump from spinning backwards; use the guide in the engine compartment to check placement. After that, take off the plastic cover from the B+ mounting stud and remove the circled nut along its top edge. Push on the connector tab at the back of the generator to release the field wire electrical connector. Make sure to remove a mounting bolt that is vertical and two that are horizontal before you bring out the generator.
