To replace the alternator on a gasoline engine, start by connecting the negative
Battery Cable so that you avoid getting hurt. Take out the generator
Drive Belt, lift the plastic cover from the B+ stud and take off the top of the B+ terminal mounting nut. To break the connection, push on the tab at the back of the field wire connector for the generator. To remove the generator's mounting for the 2.4L engine, unbolt the two holding it in place; for the 3.7L engine, remove the vertical bolt as well as the two holding it horizontally. Once the generator has been taken out from the vehicle, lower the new generator onto the engine bracket and attach the two bolts for the 2.4L engine or the three bolts for the 3.7L engine, tightening the horizontal bolts next to each other and then the uppermost vertical bolt to the suggested torque. Fit the field wire connector into the rear of the generator, attach the B+ terminal and bolt to its mounting stud and snap the plastic cover back on the B+ terminal. Add the drive belt, making sure its path is accurate so your engine doesn't get too hot. After that, reattach the negative battery cable.
