2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Parking Brake Shoe on 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before you do any work, support and raise your vehicle on jacks. When you have to, remove the parking brake shoes on each side of the vehicle one at a time. Take out the wheel mounting nuts and remove the whole tire and wheel assembly. When needed, some believe that retracting the caliper piston slightly helps ensure the pads do not contact the rotor as you remove the caliper which can damage the piston. Remove the bolts holding the two caliper guide pins, then lift off the caliper assembly by turning the top of the caliper away from the rotor and using it to lift the caliper up from the lower machined abutment. Fasten the brake caliper to the top of the rear strut using some wire or cord to keep it from touching the brake hose. Take off any parts attaching the brake rotor to the wheel studs, then glide the brake rotor straight off the hub and bearing. Grab a screwdriver and use it to undo the dust cap held by the rear hub and bearing first, then use it to undo the retaining nut on the rear hub and bearing and then remove the hub with the bearing attached to the rear spindle. Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down clip from the hold-down pin, adjust the brake shoe adjuster wheel so it's fully shortened and remove the adjuster from the parking brake shoes. After that, remove the lower return spring, move the rear brake shoe aside and free from the anchor and take out the upper return spring, getting rid of both from the vehicle. Remove the last part by lifting out the front brake shoe after removing the front brake shoe hold-down clip from its pin.
