2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Steering Knuckle on 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The process of servicing or repairing a steering knuckle starts with cleaning its bearing bore with a clean shop towel to get rid of all grease and dirt. For support, fit the knuckle into an arbor press with the Special Tool C-4698-2 from Installer 3. Put the NEW wheel bearing 2 into the bore, so it is firmly and centrally located. First, use Installer 4 and Special Tool 5052 on the outer part of the wheel bearing and then push the bushing completely to the knuckle by pressing the arbor press ram 1 down. Mount bearing retainer plate 3 on the knuckle with copies of the original bolts, making sure the notch fits at 1 and tighten the three bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.). Place the studs through the mounting holes in the hub flange and position the hub 2 on the Installer 3 fixture, use the arbor press 3 and Special Tool C-4698-1 to push down the stud and seat it securely in the hub. Finish this process for the remaining two studs. After that, fit the arbor press down onto the knuckle, with the arbor positioned in the wheel bearing and use the smaller end of Remover/Installer 3, Special Tool MB-990799 to support the inner race of the wheel bearing. Position wheel hub 2 into the wheel bearing so it is straight with the inner race and lower arbor press ram 1 to push the hub into the bearing all the way in. See to it that there is no rubbing or binding in the hub as you press it back into position.
