2009 Dodge Ram 3500 Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Clock Spring Assembly on 2009 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: First, turn off the Supplemental Restraint System by unplugging and isolating the car battery and wait two minutes so the car's system capacitor is discharged. Bring the front wheels straight so they are pointed forward. Support the center of the rotor and case or leave the plastic locking pin in place, then lower the Clock Spring slowly over the shaft above the steering column. Line the hole in the locating tab on the Clock Spring case with the pin on the multi-function switch mounting housing and use the two screws to lock the Clock Spring to the mounting housing, tightening them to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Join the two harness connectors from the instrument panel to the receptacles found beneath the steering column on the rear of the Clock Spring housing. On vehicles using Electronic Stability Program (ESP), return the instrument panel wire harness connector into the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) connector under the clock spring at the back of the steering column. Slide the lower shroud onto the steering column and screw in the center bolt, tightening it to a torque of 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Put the lower shroud over the steering column and ensure the gearshift lever gap hider enters the notch if automatic is your transmission. Slide the upper shroud's snap features over the lower shroud's receptacles and hand press them together; afterward, loop outboard screws through the upper shroud and tighten these to secure the upper to lower shroud at 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Hold the tilt steering column knob in position along the actuator of the tilt adjuster on the left steering column and insert and tighten the screw to make sure the knob is secure to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Put the opening cover for the steering wheel onto the instrument panel. If you have put in a new Clock Spring, take out the plastic pin that holds the rotor to the case and removes pressure to the Clock Spring which will center the Clock Spring. Index the engagement dowel on the upper part of the Clock Spring rotor between the two fins that are part of the steering wheel armature hub's lower surface. Attach the steering wheel to the steering column and plug the wire harness connectors from the steering wheel into the upper Clock Spring connectors, putting the wire harness between the steering wheel back trim cover and the steering wheel armature. Reattach the driver air bag onto the steering wheel and then secure the battery negative cable again.
