2009 Jeep Commander Windshield Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install a Windshield to Guarantee Optimal Performance and Prevent Damage on 2009 Jeep Commander?
A: It is important not to use your vehicle for 24 hours after installing the windshield to allow the urethane adhesive to set correctly, in case you are involved in an accident. Don't fully roll down the glass on either side of your car before installation, as it can pressurize the inside if a door is suddenly shut. Either mask up or cover all the painted areas with taped-off plastic to protect them from primer and urethane. When reusing the windshield, cut away as much of the old urethane from the glass as you can, but make sure not to scratch the paint on the fence around the windshield. Vacuum and wipe away extra adhesive from the windshield fence while keeping it one millimeter tall and add new or fixed support spacers around the edge. Make the outer bead of urethane along the windshield fence less than 1 mm thick and place additional adhesive spacers where they're missing. Put a new rubber seal at the top of the windshield, position the windshield into the opening above the fence and spacers and make certain it is flat. Mark outlines on the windshield and fence, next remove the windshield and set it down on some padding. To clean, use a solution of ammonia and a dry cloth, then rub adhesion promoter along the outside edge of the windshield, buffing it until there are no marks. Once the edges are prepared, use glass primer all around and wait about three minutes for it to dry; use a flashlight to spot uneven spots and touch them up with primer afterward. Wipe down the windshield barrier, spray on the pinch weld primer and let it dry while making sure the coat is even. Starting at the middle bottom of the glass, put a 10 mm wide bead of adhesive on the front edge, going about 6 mm into the glass with a triangular nozzle and finish by smoothing the ends flush. Place the windshield so the reference marks match, then slowly lower it into place making sure the rubber seal is in the right spot. Work the windshield backward until it touches the spacers before you install the cowl grill, the rear view mirror and the rain sensor module.
