2009 Jeep Compass Windshield Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Install a Windshield on 2009 Jeep Compass?
A: Before the vehicle can be used, the windshield must rest on the urethane for at least 24 hours to cure. Never pressurize the passenger area by opening only the front door glass until the urethane has cured, so as not to allow water leaks if a door is closed carelessly. Clean the windshield fence by taking off most of the old bonding material, leaving only 1-2 mm, as taking everything off will remove the paint's surface and weaken the bond. Place any missing or broken support spacers around the cowl at the base of the windshield. If the windshield is an older model, remove and level the adhesive around the edges (3) so it's less than 1 mm (0.04 in.) thick and take out any loose pieces of adhesive. Attach new spacers (1) to the top of the glass (2), add the lower spacer assemblies (4) into the slotted holes so they're locked upwards and place the windshield (1) at the center, resting on the side and lower spacers (2 and 3). Assemble the roof gap tolerance by shifting the lower spacers (3) as much as necessary. Set adhesive tape (1) around the windshield edge to assure the gap is even, check, cut it off and remove the windshield to finish. Use a glass preparation solvent and rag to wipe the area of glass you want to re-glue, make sure the glass primer is in good condition and re-prime any looking damaged. Put primer (1) around each edge of the glass, a full 15 mm (0.5 in.) (2) wide, let it air dry for at least 10 minutes. For your new windshield, fit the upper spacers to the top of the glass, put four new spacers on the A-pillars and lock the lower spacer assemblies into the fitting slots with the flat side facing up. Make sure the windshield is above the center line in the opening before proceeding. Next, fit the lower spacers underneath, check for damage on the windshield, sandwich it between strips of adhesive tape and convey that the edge gaps are level. Prepare the glass by cleaning and drying, opt for primer on the gluing side at the glass seal and leave it to dry for 10 minutes. Remove any dirt from the windshield opening, press the old adhesive down so it is level with the glass (1) and clean what will be glued to make it dry. Repriming any defective parts is necessary and you should let the primer dry uncovered for at least 10 minutes. Put a line of adhesive (1) through the triangular nozzle on the bottom center of the seal and stick the windshield within 5 minutes after adding the adhesive, so that it covers the seal with a bead width of 9.5 mm (4) and a height of 12.7 mm (1). Apply the glue bead to the primed windshield, smooth both ends, slide the windshield into place and press down while laying it down. Place the cowl panel or rear view mirror wherever it should be mounted.
