  A: You should always start by evacuating the refrigerant from the system to service the A/C expansion valve. Remove the negative terminal from the negative battery. There is a nut that secures the A/C suction line and the A/C liquid line to the A/C expansion valve; loosen and remove that nut. Disconnect the A/C suction and liquid lines from the A/C expansion valve and get rid of the O-ring seals. After that, place the refrigerant lines where they won't block your view. After that, unwind the two bolts securing the A/C expansion valve to the evaporator tube tapping block. Remove the A/C expansion valve from the evaporator tube tapping block and throw out the O-ring seals. Afterwards, put plugs in or cover the ends of the refrigerant line, evaporator tube and all expansion valve ports with tape.
