Q: What is the correct method to install a Piston Ring Set on 2009 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The I.D. mark from the manufacturer should face up on top of the piston during installation. Before anything else, position the parts in the sequence of oil ring expander, lower oil ring side rail, upper oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. To set the side rail, slide one end into the gap between the piston ring groove and the expander and hold it tightly as you press the rail into position, but not with an expander. Installing, the lower side rail should come first and then the upper side rail. After that, install the No. 2 piston ring and then add the No. 1 piston ring. Always position the piston ring end gaps and make sure the oil ring expander gap (5) is at least 45° from both side rail gaps (1, 4), not on the piston pin (3), nor in the piston's thrust direction, since this helps control the oil.
