To disconnect the power steering rack and pinion, start by disconnecting the ground side of the
Battery Cable from its ground stud on the shock tower and put a cable isolator on it. Place the front tires in a straight line, then fit a holding clamp on the
Steering Wheel to lock it from rotating. First, remove both the retaining pin and the coupler bolt, then part the intermediate steering shaft from the coupler. Use a frame contact hoist to raise the vehicle until the front tires are no longer touching the floor. After removing the caps, reach the nuts under the
Wiper Arm by loosening the wiper arms back and forth. Take the cowl module and reinforcement off by undoing eight bolts for the reinforcement and the single bolt that held the wiper module in place. Eliminate the in-line resonator and the inlet hose from the
Throttle Body and the air let hose from the air cleaner housing. If the steering rack and pinion automatically reacts to speed, disconnect the solenoid control valve from the harness located on the rack and pinion end cap. Loosen the two nuts keeping the master cylinder connected to the vacuum, take off the brake fluid level switch connector and pull the entire cylinder and brake tubes to the upright position on the left side valve cover to keep the fluid from spilling. Remove the foam washer and disconnect the hose from the power brake vacuum booster. At the same time, bend the tabs on the tie rod to rack and pinion mounting plate. Lift out the bolts, the mounting plate and the washers under the tie rods at the rack and pinion and lay them on top of the transaxle bell housing. Remove the fluid using a siphon pump and take out the fluid pressure and return hoses from the rack and pinion after that. Unbolt both bolts holding the left side rack and pinion to the crossmember and the two bolts holding the right side bracket, as well as possibly uncross the right mounting bolts to free the air conditioning lines. Push the rack and pinion and intermediate shaft forward so you can reach the intermediate shaft flex coupler retaining pin in the rack and pinion shaft. Then, extract that roll pin using Special Tool 6831A. Disconnect the steering shaft from the rack and pinion, lift the car and remove the wheel on the right front side. Unlock the nut that holds the tie rod end to the steering arm on the right strut and use Puller, Special Tool C-3894-A, to free the tie rod end from the steering arm. Drop the tie rod from the car, making sure the left front tire/wheel is turned out before removing it if your car has a 2.7 liter engine. After that, guide the rack and pinion into the tie rod hole on the inner right fender until half is out, raise the left portion of the rack and pinion away from the car and guide it to the passenger side to take it out from between the engine and the cowl.
