The first step in dismantling the camshaft is to remove both
Timing Chains and their tensioners. Engine manufacturing leaves marks on the camshaft bearing caps, so the number one exhaust camshaft bearing is labeled "1E>." Take off the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the order you installed them, starting from the loosest and then remove the caps. Take out the camshafts, secondary chain and tensioner as an individual assembly, then separate the chain from the camshafts. Look for any signs of damage on each camshaft. If the camshaft is binding or damaged, you may notice it when you look at the bearing journals and inspect the cylinder head to check for any oil hole blockages. Check if the camshaft sprockets are frayed and inspect the cam lobe surfaces for any odd signs of wear or harm; if these are present, replace the camshaft. Look at the actual value of wear which must not exceed a standard of 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) and should not reach or pass more than 0.254 mm (0.010 inch) before replacement. Do not turn the
Crankshaft until you have checked and found the proper place for the timing chain, as this will help prevent harming the pistons or valves. Slide the links with the plated side out, then line the pins on the links up with the dots on the camshaft sprockets. Should the tensioner be compressed and locked, go on to the next step. Should that be the case, secure the tensioner with a soft jaw vise, placing a lock pin into the holes, before taking it out of the vise. Fit the compressed and locked camshaft chain tensioner between the chain and camshafts and rotate the cam shafts until the plated links and dots are at the top. Align the
Rocker Arms under the cams and then secure the cams to the top of the cylinder head. Lift the camshaft bearing caps into place as you removed them and tighten the bolts up to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) as described in the proper order. Place and tighten the secondary chain tensioner bolts to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) and after that, take out the locking pin from the tensioners. Check the end play on the camshafts and after that set up the primary timing chain.
