Ignition Lock Cylinder is utilized in Chrysler PT Cruiser and its main role is to allow starting of an engine by inserting and turning of a key. This component is 'built in' into the portion of the car known as the ignition switch that sends electrical power into the needed circuits when the correct key is turned. The design also has a distinct tumbler which enables the user to increase security so that only the owner can unlock the vehicle. In prior generations of the Chrysler PT Cruiser, auto manufacturers installed key-operated ignition lock cylinders that can open cars but have to be turned on the wiring circuits to start the car's engine and ignitions. Where the former involves a key and tumbler method the later involves a plastic or metallic key fob that transmits signals to the car's computer. The keyless type is assumed to be more convenient and less prone to failure as compared to the mechanical type, which, though, may also wear down and malfunction in the course of time. Altogether, Ignition Lock Cylinder is vital for every vehicle's functioning and security for Chrysler PT Cruiser models.

Chrysler PT Cruiser Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an Ignition Lock Cylinder on Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A:
Get the job done by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery first. Insert the key cylinder into RUN and by pulling up on the tab underneath the lower shroud, take the key cylinder through the hole. Insert the key into the lock cylinder, turn it to the RUN position and press down the retaining tab in the lock cylinder to do the installation. Check that the switch at the end of the housing is in the RUN position so the shaft on the lock cylinder is aligned. Place the lock cylinder into the housing and move it back until the tab comes out of the opening. Turn the key to Off and take it out and next, reattach the negative cable to the battery.
  • Q: How to Remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder on Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A:
Before removing the Ignition Lock Cylinder, undo and remove the Steering Column Control Module (3) from the steering column (2). After that, take out the column wiring harness routing clip from the bottom area of the lock cylinder housing. If there is an automatic transaxle, first depress the tab on the ignition shift interlock cable (3) attached to the steering column, then remove the cable from the ignition cylinder in the column housing (1). Undo the screw (1) holding the Skreem/Wcm (2) to the cylinder housing (3), then remove each retainer finger from the Skreem/Wcm (2) and lift it out. Put the key in the door, move the cylinder to the Run position and depress the retaining tab with a suitable tool through the slot in the lock. While holding the unit, lift the whole thing out of the lock cylinder housing. With Torx(R) Plus Bit, Special Tool 10041 or its equivalent, unscrew the two screws (1) attaching the lock cylinder housing (2) to the steering column and take away the lock cylinder housing. When ignition switch transfer is required, first remove the screw (1) and slowly remove the switch (1) from its retaining tabs (2) on the lock cylinder.
