The Power Steering Pump in Chrysler Sebring helps in converting energy from the engine for instance optimal energy to hydraulic energy to making steering easier. This pump works through application of fluid pressure that is used in controlling the movement of the car, especially during slow movement of the car, or even when the car is stationary. The pump is usually connected to the engine crankshaft by using V belt or serpentine belt and has an associated fluid container, which may encased or detached. Chrysler sebring models have used hydraulic power steering systems which retain a mechanical link with the steering wheels so as to afford manual steering in case the power mechanism fails. The main design has been preserved, but variations in tuning have been used to address the preferences regarding driving with focusing the levels of assistance for standard and performance cars. Problems associated with Chrysler Sebring Power Steering Pump include the following, leakage, noises and variations in the power steering assistance which may require inspection or replacement.

Chrysler Sebring Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Power Steering Pump on a 2.0L/2.4L Engine on Chrysler Sebring?
    A:
It is important to make sure the engine, exhaust system and power steering fluid are not hot before proceeding to install the power steering pump on a 2.0L/2.4L engine to avoid burns. Assemble and mount the power steering pump and front bracket together into the vehicle following the order you took them out. Install the pump and front bracket on the cast aluminum engine bracket and loosely attach the upper mounting pivot bolt. Screw in the pump mounting bolt half-way from the front slot on the mounting bracket to the nut in the rear bracket adjustment slot. Put the power steering pump Drive Belt on the pump pulley and adjust belt tension using a 1/2 inch breaker bar in the square adjusting hole of the front mounting bracket. When the right tension is found, tighten the two adjusting slot fasteners to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and then tighten the top pivot bolt to the same torque. Use a clean towel on all open Power Steering Hose ends and pump fittings, add a new O-ring to the pressure hose and lubricate it with your fresh power steering fluid. Slide the end of the power steering pressure hose onto the pump pressure fitting and tighten the tube nut up to a torque of 31 Nm (275 inch lbs.). Secure the accessory drive splash shield and then bring the vehicle back to its normal level. Line up the hose to the fitting where the pump connects and push the hose clamp past the bumpy part on the suction fitting. Link the negative cable to the battery again, put the power steering fluid to the correct amount and do the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation task. After that, look for leaks at all the hose connections and the power steering pump.
  • Q: How to Remove a Power Steering Pump from a 2.0L or 2.4L Engine on Chrysler Sebring?
    A:
Before removing the power steering pump from a 2.0L or 2.4L engine, disconnect the negative battery cable and separate it from the rest. Important: Take out as much power steering fluid as you can from the remote reservoir, then pull out the clamp and fluid supply hose attached to the pump fitting, plugging the hose's hole afterwards. Lift up your vehicle and then take off the accessory drive splash protector. Separate the hose from the pump's pressure point so the fluid can drain; then, fill, cap and plug the hose and pressure fitting. Moving on, take out the bolt from the adjustment hole on the front bracket and the nut from the one on the rear cast aluminum mounting bracket. First, remove the pump Drive Belt while the upper pivot bolt is loosened, then remove the bolt once more. Pull out the entire power steering pump and its associated bracket as one assembly through the space above the right drive shaft and under the right frame rail. For taking out the pulleys or brackets, use the disassembly instructions.
