Timing Belt also referred to as timing chain in Chrysler Town & Country vehicle assists in the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft, thus coordinating the opening and closing of the engine valve for efficiency. This is done through the intermediate of the belt that joins with the crankshaft with the help of a tensioner as well as idler pulleys. Eventually, Chrysler Town & Country has been adopting rubber belts that contain fibers and it is renowned for being cheaper, of low friction and produces less noise compared to the older gears. Although timing belts have been produced with curved teeth for higher performance and to eliminate high pitched sounds, their general inspection and replacement are critical to avoid harm on the engine. A damaged timing belt results in serious problems, particularly for those vehicles with interference engines, where pistons may strike open valves. Hence, the Chrysler Town & Country automobiles' timing belt must be kept well-maintained in order to provide the automobile its well needed optimum performance and duration.

Chrysler Town & Country Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Belt on Chrysler Town & Country?
    A:
The outer Timing Covers should be removed and the Crankshaft must be rotated so its pointer on the sprocket (10) can be lined up with the TDC mark on the oil pump (9). Look for proper alignment of the camshaft sprocket timing marks with the inner timing cover marks (1) and (8) which you might have to achieve by spinning the crankshaft an additional time. Valve train rocker assemblies should be loosened first, since the 4.0L engine is not designed to have the valve train free. It is important to do the fuel pressure release and then disconnect the negative battery cable after that. Undo the valve covers, ease the tension on the rocker system and take out the covers on the timing belt after. If you decide to use the timing belt again, note its running direction. Keep rotating the engine clockwise until the mark on the crankshaft lines up with TDC on the oil pump and the marks on the rear timing belt cover, (1) and (8), match up with those on the sprockets. Normally, you will do these steps in order: Remove the Timing Belt Tensioner (12) and the timing belt, look for fluid leaks on the tensioner, ensure the pivot and bolt move freely, inspect the grease and examine the smoothness of rotations; replace the arm and pulley assembly if it feels or acts differently from before. If you remove the tensioner from the engine, press the plunger into the tensioner body and ensure you have it positioned in the vise as it would be on the engine for correct indexing of the tensioner pin. Put the tensioner in a vise and gradually squeeze the plunger until all the oil is out-this should take about 5 minutes-then attach a pin through both the plunger and the body to maintain pressure until you're ready to continue.
