Parking Brake Shoe in Dodge Caravan delivers a vital function of holding the wheels whenever the car is parked. Its main operation is use in creating friction when the brake lining abuts against the drum wall thus immobilizing the wheels when the parking brake is applied. There have been different types of Parking Brake Shoe used in Dodge Caravan over the years and they have changes in a bid to make the parking brake better. Some of the differences between these types may be in the material or structure, this means that they may vary in how they function as well as their lifetimes.

Dodge Caravan Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Parking Brake Shoe on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
Before replacing the parking brake shoe, complete two steps. Set the parking brake to avoid axle and hub motion and undo the bolt that holds the drum. Remove the vehicle from the ground and lift the wheel and tire assembly off the axle. After that, take out the cotter pin and nut retainer from the end of the outer C/V joint, along with the spring washer, hub nut and washer. After releasing the parking brake, lock the automatic adjuster to loosen the rear park brake cables. Then, pull downward on the cable of the front park brake by hand until it can be secured with locking pliers. Remove brake adapter guide pin bolts holding the caliper, tilt the back lever in the direction of removal and gently pull out the front part of the caliper from under the adapter. Grab the caliper carefully to stop the flexible brake hose from being damaged and then remove the rotor from the hub/bearing. With a 1/2 wrench, compress the locking tabs on the actuator lever and adapter, remove the cable from them and detach the horseshoe clip from the park brake cable retainer. Separate the hub/bearing from the shaft by pulling it out, then using a wrench, take the wheel speed sensor off the axle and stub shaft. With the adapter off the axle and lying in a vise, take out the lower return spring, hold down spring, pin from the leading park brake shoe, adjuster and finally the leading shoe. Check the rear park brake shoe in the same way and then look at the park brake shoe actuator for wear and binding signs. The initial setup for installation is guided by the trailing brake shoe, where you put the hold down pin upright, then add the springs before closing the brake assembly. Fit the first park brake shoe into the top anchor point and spin the other shoe outward toward the shoes' circumference. After that, insert the adjustment piece between those two shoes. Place the hold down spring and pin into the leading shoe and insert the lower return spring behind both shoes. Slide the adapter and hub/bearing onto the axle and fix them with the four bolts, tightening each one in a crisscross pattern to 129 Nm (95 ft. lb.) of torque. After reinstalling the wheel speed sensor with bolt to a torque of 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.), attach the park brake cable to the adapter so the locking tabs are expanded. Plug the cable into the actuator lever, fit a horseshoe clip with the curved end aiming up and remove the locking pliers from the front brake cable. Slide the drum-in-hat brake shoes into position on the park brake drum, lower the caliper and brake shoes onto the rotor and install the rotor into place. Insert the guide pin bolts into the caliper, tighten to 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.), clean the stub shaft of the outer CV join, then put the washer and attach the hub nut, tightening it to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.). Slide the spring washer, nut retainer and cotter pin back into position and torque the stud nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) after you have installed the wheel and tire assembly. First, lower the car, operate the park brake pedal just once to adjust the cables, pump the brake pedal repeatedly to make the brakes firm and then try the car on the road to check the brakes.
  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Parking Brake Shoe on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
Before servicing or repairing the parking brake shoe, engage the parking brake on AWD models and loosen the hub nut while the hub/bearing and Axle Shaft are immobile. Hold the vehicle with support, then take off the wheel and tire from the hub. When servicing the AWD system, first take out the cotter pin and nut retainer from the outer C/V joint stub shaft, then remove the spring washer, hub nut and washer. The parking brake should be released after letting out the rear park brake cables by turning off the automatic adjuster. After that, firmly grasp and pull downward on the front park brake cable and use locking pliers to secure it. Support the disc Brake Caliper to prevent damaging its flexible hose, then unbolt the adapter guide pin bolts, rotate the caliper up and pull it off the adapter. After that, take out the rotor, unscrew the park brake cable mounting bolt and disconnect the park brake cable from both the lever and adapter by using a 1/2 wrench to compress the locking tabs. In AWD, disconnect the ABS wheel speed sensor head; in FWD, unclip the secondary clip and pull out the sensor. With soft taps from a hammer, remove the hub/bearing from the axle when necessary to avoid damage from corrosion. Take out the hub/bearing from the caliper adapter using Remover, Special Tool 8214-1, without hurting the adapter. After removing the adapter from the rear axle, put it securely into a vise. Once placed, take out the lower return spring, hold down spring, pin, adjuster and both leading and trailing park brake shoes. Check the parts of the park brake shoe actuator for damage and sticking before you install them. Installing the park brake shoe actuator should be followed by the trailing brake shoe, while ensuring the hold down pin is in the correct place. Place the hold down spring and pin, upper return springs and the leading park brake shoe, before adding the adjuster and hold down spring. Put the lower return spring behind each park brake shoe. Make sure the adapter and hub/bearing are attached with the mounting bolts and that the hub/bearing is sitting squarely and tightened to 129 Nm (95 ft. lbs.). If an AWD system, put in the wheel speed sensor and fasten its bolt to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.); for FWD, check that the retaining clip is in the right spot and fix the sensor head and the second clip. Install the park brake cable again, making sure the locking tabs are out and join it to the actuator lever and adapter. Let go of the locking pliers, adjust the brake shoes, park the brake and put on the rotor. Slowly set the caliper and brake shoes on the rotor, checking that the guide pin bolts are not crossed during their installation and tighten them to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). For AWD, wipe the outer C/V joint stub shaft threads, add the washer and hub nut and screw the nut in to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.). Then, tighten the spring washer and nut retainer and insert the cotter pin. Connect the wheel and tire back onto the car and tighten the stud nuts on the wheel mounts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) correct sequence. Raise the body again, try the parking brake, press and release the pedal to adjust the cables, pump the brake and do a road test to position the brake shoe linings.
