Take off the steering coupling pinch bolt from the rack and pinion, along with the pressure hose tube nut and remove the pressure hose. Unconnect the return hose tube nut from the rack and pinion and pull off the return hose next. When the job is done, take out the bolts that hold the rack and pinion in place and if needed, remove the outer tie rods from the rack and pinion and count the number of full rotations of each rod so you have the right reference for the replacement gear.
- Q: How to Install a Rack and Pinion Steering System on Dodge Challenger?A:If the gear comes with outer tie rods, first put the original outer tie rods onto the opposite connection of the replacement inner tie rods to even the thread number and keep the toe setting the same. Move the rack and pinion into place, attaching it with the mounting bolts and tighten the bolts to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Every time, replace the O-ring on the ends of the steering hoses; coat the new O-ring on the return hose with power steering fluid, attach it to the rack and pinion and tighten the tube nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Place a bit of clean power steering fluid on the new O-ring at the end of the pressure hose, attach the pressure hose to the rack and pinion and tighten the tube nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). When the rack and pinion is placed into travel to match the Clock Spring, align the coupling with the input shaft and tighten the new pinch bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Attach every outer tie rod end to its knuckle using nuts tightened to 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.) and then install the wheels and tires, be sure to tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 150 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) or 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.). After lowering the vehicle, put the negative cable onto the battery post so it goes on securely. Work on the power steering system, fill and bleed it, then set the wheel alignment according to given specifications. Make sure to tighten both tie rod jam nuts using 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.) of torque.
