Removal of the air cleaner assembly, the air inlet hose and the cylinder head cover is the first step to servicing the lifter/lash adjuster. After that, blindfold the rocker assembly and push rods, checking the push rods before you reinstall them. Unbolt the
Intake Manifold from the
Camshaft, next remove the yoke retainer and separated yokes. Slide the Hydraulic Tappet Remover/Installer Tool C-4129-A into the cylinder head and drop it into the tappet head. Pull the tappet from the bore with a twisting movement. If tappets are being removed from every carburetor, write the order of tappets down so they are put back in the right position. If either of the two receives a score, scratch or seems to stick, ream the bore to fit the next size tappet and install a new, bigger tappet. Treat the pieces with suitable solvent, rinse them in hot water and then blow off the excess liquid with a clean shop rag or compressed air. For the tappets, apply Engine Oil Supplement or a similar product, install them in their correct places and be sure the oil feed hole of each is turned upwards. Assemble the aligning yokes with the Arrow facing the camshaft, then the yoke retainer on top and secure all with 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.) torque. Attach the intake manifold,
Rocker Arms and cylinder head cover and chain everything up on its own before installing the air cleaner assembly and air inlet hose. At the start, warm the engine up, but don't let it run above fast idle until the tappets are completely full of oil and make little noise, so you don't risk damaging the valve mechanism.
