Dodge Dakota Spark Plug Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to remove the Spark Plug located under each ignition coil on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
To remove the spark plug, which is located under each ignition coil, first remove the necessary air filter tubing and air intake components at the top of the engine and at the throttle body. Before taking out the ignition coil, spray compressed air around the coil base at the cylinder head. Then, spray compressed air into the cylinder head opening to prevent foreign material from entering the combustion chamber. Use a quality socket with a rubber or foam insert to remove the spark plug from the cylinder head, and check the condition of the ignition coil O-ring, replacing it as necessary. Finally, inspect the condition of the spark plug.
  • Q:
What special care should be taken when installing Spark Plug(s) into the cylinder head spark plug wells on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
During cylinder head installation, care must be taken to not drop spark plugs into their wells for installation. Drop a spark plug, and you damage the electrode. Cranking the plugs to 27 Nm (20 ft.lbs) will help prevent distortion that can alter the spark plug gap or crack the porcelain insulator. To avoid cross threading, manually initiate the spark plug into the cylinder head before tightening the spark plugs. Prior to installing the ignition coil(s), check the condition of the coil O-ring and replace it if necessary; silicone may be used on the coil O-ring. Ultimately, put in the ignition coil(s).
