  • Q: How Does a Distributor Get Removed and Installed on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
    By unlatching the negative cable from the battery and removing the air cleaner assembly, you can take away the distributor. Unfasten the two screws on the distributor cap and notice which way the distributor housing fits next to the engine or dash panel so you know where to place it once removed. Turn the engine clockwise until the vibration damper's mark lines up with the 0 Tdc mark on the Timing Cover above the number one cylinder. Move the Camshaft Position Sensor until the Cyl. No. 1 mark on it lines up with the distributor rotor; if this doesn't happen, rotate the Crankshaft by turning it one more time. Disconnect the wiring harness of the camshaft position sensor and take out the distributor rotor. Then, unfasten the bolt and remove the clamp and remove the distributor from its position in the engine. When installing, if the engine has been cranked, turn the crankshaft clockwise until the number one piston comes to the top of its compression, then bring the crankshaft mark into line with the 0 Tdc mark. Clean the upper part of the cylinder block and touch a little oil onto the seal on the distributor before putting the rotor on the distributor shaft. Ensure the distributor is back correctly in place as the shaft should touch the oil pump drive gear and the rotor should be next to the number one spark plug wire. Attach the holddown clamp and bolt, but don't tighten them and then turn the distributor until the rotor is aligned with the Cyl. The camshaft position sensor is marked as no.1. Tighten the clamp holddown bolt to 22.5 Nm (200 in. lbs.), join the camshaft position sensor wiring harness and mount the distributor cap with the screws firmly in place. To test the distributor position, touch the end of the tool to the data link connector in the lower left section of the passenger compartment under the Steering Column. Select the Set Sync system, start your engine and wait for it to get hot. Under no-load condition, the monitor shows In Range and 0° to illustrate a proper distributor position. Should In Range not show in the window, loosen the holddown clamp bolt, rotate the distributor and attach the In Range mark, then tighten the bolt firmly to 200 in. lbs. torque. Be aware that the degree scale on the Set Sync screen sets fuel synchronization, leaving control of ignition timing to the Powertrain Control Module (Pcm). Also, place the air cleaner assembly back into position.
