- Q: How to Install an Axle Shaft in the Rear Assembly on Dodge Grand Caravan?A:Position the Axle Beam on a transmission jack centered at the height where the axle was removed, raise it and swing the rear trailing arms up until the bushings are lined up with the brackets on the body. Drill a thru-bolt from each bracket into the trailing arm bushing and a nut onto each, but do not tighten them yet. The end of each coil spring should have the tag facing up and you should add both a lower isolator and a jounce bumper to each spring. Sandwich the body perch between the axle and the coil springs with the jounce bumper on top and raise the jack as you guide the coil springs forward into place. Depress the jack until the bolt holes line up in the axle brackets and in the lower eyes of the Shock Absorber, then place the lower mounting bolts and nuts into each shock absorber, but do not tighten them. Use a bolt and nut to secure the Track Bar to the axle and don't tighten yet. When finished, take away the jack from under the axle as well. Attach the hub and bearing to the axle, as well as the brake shield and bolt them down with mounting bolts tightened to 55 Nm. Clean the surface where the wheel speed sensor attaches and then push the sensor head into the hub and bearing, align the screw hole and put in a new screw, tightened to 6 Nm. Attach the wheel speed sensor routing clip onto the rear axle and then slide the brake rotor over the hub and bearing. Join the caliper and the adapter bracket on the axle as an assembly, then tighten them with two bolts to 100 Nm. Fix the Parking Brake Cable routing bracket to the axle after alignment and tighten the screw to 6 Nm. Then keep the right rear parking brake cable in front of the axle and fasten it with screws tightened at 6 Nm. On the vehicle's right and left sides, attach the tires and wheels, tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm and then lower the car. - Q: How to Service and Repair a Front Axle Shaft on Dodge Grand Caravan?A:Service or repair the half shaft front axle by first raising the vehicle securely on jack stands or a contact type hoist. With the half shaft held firmly, let go of the cotter pin, set aside the nut lock and then remove the wave washer. Take the wheel and tire off and while the brakes are holding, loosen and take out the half shaft nut. Remove the attachment bolts between the two front disc Brake Caliper adapters and the Steering Knuckles and after rotating the caliper away, remove the assembly by removing the bottom end. Place a wire hook under the caliper assembly so any tension is kept off the brake flex hose and then take out the brake rotor from the bearing assembly on the hub. Grab the stud with a socket and turn the nut on the Tie Rod End stud counterclockwise with a wrench. Use Remover, Special Tool MB-991113, to disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle, followed by removing the steering knuckle to strut attachment bolts and pulling the steering knuckle out of the clevis bracket, making sure not to detach the inner CV joint. While lowering and moving away the steering knuckle, withdraw the outer CV joint from the hub bearing. Place your support below the half shaft assembly, put a pry bar behind the tripod joint and push until you hear the snap-ring free itself from the transaxle side gear. Hold the inner tripod joint and interconnecting shaft and then pull the inner tripod joint straight out of the transaxle so it doesn't touch the oil seal. Before installation, wipe clean the sealing surface where the spline and oil seal are attached, apply a small amount of oil and fit the tripod joint onto the side gear on the transaxle. Hold the tripod well above the ground and push the joint firmly into the side gear. The snap-ring should engage and stop you from removing it by hand. Clean the spot where the outer CV joint will be set and make sure that in front of the joint is free from debris and moisture. Secure the steering knuckle to the clevis bracket of the strut damper, then use 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) plus an extra 1/4 turn on steering knuckle attaching bolts. Push the tie rod end into the steering knuckle, then fasten the nut onto the stud firmly while handling the stud and secure it with a crowfoot and socket attached to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Secure the braking disc on the hub and bearing assembly, then mount the disc brake caliper assembly in its correct place. Place the disc brake caliper adapter attaching bolts using a torque of 169 Nm (125 ft. lbs.). Cover the threads of the outer CV joint, put the washer on top of it, add the half shaft to hub/bearing assembly nut and tighten the nut securely. Reassemble the front wheel and align it, then pre-tighten the wheel nuts to half the required value spoken in the manual, repeat the sequence for the full recommended torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Reduce the car and, using the brakes, secure the hub nut so that it measures 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.). Install the spring wave washer at the end of the half shaft, add the hub nut lock and fit a new cotter pin around the hub nut lock. Inspect the transaxle fluid and arrange the front toe so that it meets the given specifications.
