  Depending on when your vehicle was made, it has one of two different brake lamp switches that are not compatible. When producing a car for the first time, the negative Battery Cable should be taken off and isolated first. Should you find one, remove the piece that is beneath the steering column. Go under the instrument panel and look for the brake lamp switch bracketed to the brake pedal, separate the switch wire and rotate the switch housing counterclockwise so the notches on the switch locking collar fit into the matching keyed hole. Take the switch straight out of the keyed hole by pulling it rearward, then discard the switch, as you must replace it with a new one. If you are doing the late work, start out by separating and isolating the battery negative wire and remove the silencer pad only if your vehicle is so equipped. Open the brake lamp switch on the bracket under the instrument panel, depress and hold down the brake pedal and spin the housing counterclockwise about 30 degrees until the locking device on the switch matches the hole on the pedal mount. Straighten the switch out of its hole while you have the key in place, press the brake pedal, then disconnect the connector from the switch.

  Because brake lamps are specific to each period, the two switches cannot be interchanged. Before working on anything connected to the air bag, steering column or wheel, seat belts, impact sensors or instrument panel, first unhook the SRS from the battery and allow two minutes to pass. The switch for early production must have the adjustment lever slightly diagonally aligned with the connector; if it is straight, the switch must be abandoned. Push the brake pedal to the floor, slide the switch locking collar so that the notches align with the key hole in the support bracket, insert them both and twist the switch housing clockwise. Do not press the brake pedal all the way up; instead, rotate the adjustment release lever clockwise to catch the position parallel to where it plugs into the vehicle. Attach the wire harness connector to the brake lamp switch and, if the car has one, install the silencer pad below the steering column before returning the battery's negative cable to its place. For production toward the end of the process, make sure the brake lamp switch plunger is completely extended, attach the wire harness on the connector again, push down on the brake pedal, line up the tabs and keyed hole on the locking collar, insert the tab and twist the switch housing clockwise. Release the brake pedal and touch it upwards gently to allow the plunger to adjust by itself. You'll hear a light ratcheting noise when this happens. If your vehicle comes with a silencer pad, put it back under the steering column and then reinstall the battery negative cable.
