Before beginning the procedure, ensure to review applicable Service Precautions. To remove the backing plate, use a brake pedal holding tool to depress the brake pedal past its first inch of travel and hold it, isolating the master cylinder from the brake hydraulic system to prevent brake fluid from draining. Raise the vehicle and remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Disconnect the rear brake flex hose from the wheel cylinder and remove the rear brake drum. Take off the dust cap from the rear hub and bearing, then remove the nut securing the rear hub and bearing to the spindle and take the hub and bearing off the spindle. Remove the rear brake shoes from the brake support plate and detach the parking brake actuator lever from the parking brake cable. Use a 1/2 inch wrench to compress the retainer fingers on the parking brake cable, then pull the cable housing out of the support plate, freeing the retainer from the mounting hole. Remove the four brake support plate mounting bolts and washers, separating the brake support plate from the rear suspension knuckle, and then remove the brake wheel cylinder attaching bolts and the brake wheel cylinder from the brake support plate. For installation, place a new O-ring at the mating surface of the wheel cylinder-to-brake support plate, ensuring the wheel cylinder is positioned squarely to the brake support plate before installing it and tightening the attaching bolts to a torque of 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.). Install the brake support plate and gasket on the rear suspension knuckle, tightening the mounting bolts to a torque of 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Insert the parking brake cable into its mounting hole in the brake support plate and push the cable housing in until the retainer's fingers lock into place. Hand start the brake flex hose tube fitting to the wheel cylinder and tighten the tube nut to a torque of 17 Nm (145 inch lbs.). Attach the parking brake cable to the parking brake actuator, then install the rear brake shoe assemblies on the brake support plate. Install the rear hub and bearing assembly on the spindle with a new retaining nut, tightening it to a torque of 217 Nm (160 ft. lbs.), and then install the dust cap. Next, install the brake drum and the wheel and tire assembly, tightening the wheel mounting nuts to a torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Adjust the rear brake shoes, lower the vehicle, remove the brake pedal holding tool, bleed the wheel cylinder as necessary, and conduct a road test to ensure the brakes operate correctly.
