The Timing Chain in Dodge Nitro vehicles play a very vital role of ensuring the rotation of the camshaft and crankshaft synchronizes well for the required valve timing that is important for performance. Located at the front of the engine, the Timing Chain has to be lubricated so as to function efficiently and is usually available in high displacement engines. Timing chains are in contrast to rubber timing belts have gained popularity especially since the early 1990s due to the fact that they do not wear out easily and therefore rarely require replacing. With regard to the Dodge Nitro, one can use mostly a metal Timing Chain, and various problems may appear because of incorrect oiling, wear in the Timing Chain tensioner a/or Chain guides, the corresponding symptom here is an emitted rattle coming from the car's front part of the engine. Single helical spur gearing is desired to reduce noise and of course wear yet be robust enough to be quite acceptable for use in the pushrod engine layout of the Dodge Nitro. In general, the Timing Chain is a critical part that adds to the durability as well as effective performance of Dodge Nitro automobiles.

Dodge Nitro Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Chain and Sprockets on Dodge Nitro?
    A:
Before starting, disconnect the Battery Cable and drain the cooling system. Then, take out the right and left cylinder head covers and then remove the radiator fan shroud. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft damper with the TDC mark on the timing chain cover and make certain the camshaft sprocket marks are at 12 o'clock for the exhaust stroke on No. 1 cylinder. Uncover the chain guide fasteners by removing the Power Steering Pump and both access plugs on each cylinder head. You need to open the oil housing before you can take off the right tensioner arm fastener, then remove the crankshaft damper and timing chain cover. Tighten and secure the chain tensioner, making sure the Oil Pan opening is covered so the plate behind the left secondary chain tensioner can't get in. Next, remove the secondary chain tensioners and the bolt holding the sensor and pull out the sensor, ensuring you don't harm the camshaft target wheel. Refrain from turning the camshaft or crankshaft by force to be sure they do not suffer any harm. Unbolt the left and right camshaft sprockets and when holding the left camshaft steel tube with Camshaft Holder 8428A, turn left the camshaft 15 degrees clockwise and take out the left camshaft sprocket. Perform the same action on the right camshaft, turning it counterclockwise about 45 degrees until it is neutral. Once you've taken out the idler sprocket assembly bolt, push the idler sprocket and crank sprocket forward to release both chains. After that, take out the pivoting tensioner arms, chain guides and primary chain tensioner.
