Put a wire brush to use by cleaning the open ends of the pitman shaft and housing. After removing the adjuster nut, hold the rack stub shaft with a 12 point socket and turn it from end to end, counting each rotation. Rotate the stub shaft with the stop as a base until you've made the middle the center. Following this, unscrew the bolts holding the side cover, lift off the side cover, gasket and pitman shaft together, making sure the pitman shaft is in the center to get past the housing. Separate the pitman shaft from the side cover, then use a seal pick to carefully extract the dust seal from inside the bearing housing, making sure you don't harm the housing. Grab the retaining ring with snap ring pliers and then lift the washer and oil seal from the housing using a seal pick. With the help of a bearing driver and handle, fit through the top of the housing to remove the pitman shaft bearing. Begin by inserting the pitman shaft bearing into the housing using a bearing driver and a handle, slip the special grease onto the oil seal and washer and finally use a driver and a handle to install the oil seal. With snap ring pliers, fit the back up washer and retainer ring and then add the special grease to the dust seal and set it into place with a driver and handle. Place the pitman shaft on the side cover by tightening the screws until they are all seated and after the Over-Center Rotation Torque adjustment, tighten the preload adjuster nut. After putting the gasket on the side cover, bend the tabs and slide the pitman shaft assembly and cover into the housing. After that, tighten the side cover bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) and do the over-center rotation torque adjustment.
