The Throttle Body in Dodge Ram 3500 is a control component of the vehicle which controls the flow of air to the engine thus affecting the efficiency of it. Located between the air cleaner and intake manifold it contains a butterfly valve that opens in response to signals from the accelerator pedal so that more air is admitted into the engine. This action in turn causes the PCM to alter fuel injection in the system in order to produce the right air-to-fuel ratios. Through the years, old Dodge Ram 3500 models have been using Throttle Body Injection, or TBI, but today there are multi-port systems developed. Unlike TBI units, where the unit is self contained and generally uses one or two injectors, the modern throttle body come with electronics such as the Electronic Throttle Control also known as drive by wire which improves its response time and is integrated with other systems such as the traction control, antilock brake system among others. However even if these throttle bodies are durable high mileage Dodge Ram 3500 throttle bodies may accumulate somethings or wear out, and hence may require some refreshing in other to maintain the performance.

Dodge Ram 3500 Throttle Body Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Throttle Body Without Altering Engine Idle Speed on Dodge Ram 3500?
    A:
The throttle body comes with a set screw from the factory that controls how far the throttle plate can open and this screw should never be adjusted during idle speed adjustments, because the idle speed is handled by the PCM. Removal starts with air cleaner removal, then unplug the electrical wires at the MAP Sensor, IAC motor and TPS. After that, pull off the vacuum line at the throttle body and remove the cables linked to the throttle body lever arm. Then, get rid of the four bolts keeping the throttle body on the manifold and set the old gasket aside. After cleaning where the throttle body and Intake Manifold meet, fit a new gasket in between and align the throttle body with the manifold. Get the tubes to hold the crankshaft snugly by using the four mounting bolts and tightening to 23 Nm (200 in. lbs.). Secure again the control cables, vacuum line and the electric connectors and next install the air cleaner.
  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Throttle Body on a 5.7L V-8 on Dodge Ram 3500?
    A:
First, examine and clean the condition of the throttle body-to-Intake Manifold O-ring 2 and then clean both the throttle body and the intake manifold mounting surfaces. After that, fit O-ring 2 on the sides of the throttle body and intake manifold before placing the throttle body onto its pins and putting all bolts in place by hand. It is necessary to tighten the mounting bolts exactly as required, avoiding over-tightening, since this may damage the throttle body, throttle plate, gaskets, bolts or the intake manifold and the throttle body has specific torque requirements for normal operation. Tighten the bolts that attach your wheels with a torque wrench, making sure they are even across the wheel set to 5.6 Nm (50 in. lbs.). Then, put in electrical connector 2, connect the air plenum to flange 3 and reconnect the negative Battery Cable. After that, erase all existing DTCs using the diagnostic scan tool followed by the ETC Relearn function.
