First, take off the upper and intermediate
Piston rings with a suitable ring expander, then the upper and lower oil ring rails, until the oil ring expander is removed from the piston. Carefully remove any carbon clinging to the ring grooves. During installation, the mark on the rim of your piston rings should point toward the top of the piston. The rings should be put on so the gasket has the manufacturer's mark up, with the oil ring expander leading, then the upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and finally the No. 1 upper piston ring. Start by installing the oil ring expander, put the upper side rail in, then the lower side rail, making certain that each rail's end is in the space between the piston ring groove and the oil ring expander while pressing down firmly. After that, mount No. 2 piston ring and then No. 1 piston ring. Set the piston ring end gaps properly and make sure the oil ring expander gap is more than 45° away from the side rail gaps, not near the piston pin center or along the thrust direction, since correctly placed gaps help control oil in the engine.
