Before fixing the automatic transmission shifter, first take apart any parts covering the shift lever and cables in the console. When needed, unscrew the bolts holding the shield over the gearshift and park lock cables and take the shield off as well. Set the vehicle into Park and remove the transmission shift cable at the lever (3). Slot the plastic retainer (4) out of the shifter notch and discard it. With the key in the Lock position, pull the park lock cable (5) off the shifter mechanism cam and the shifter assembly hole. Unplug the connectors (2, 3) attaching the shifter assembly (1) and remove all bolts (2) holding it down to the floor pan. For installation, put the shifter assembly (1) into place on the floor pan, fasten it with bolts (2) and tighten them to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Wind up the shifter by pressing it against its highest position, unscrew the adjustment nut (2) on the shifter assembly (1) and link the gearshift cable (3) to the shift lever pin. Secure the cable to the shift mechanism cam and the slot on the shifter assembly while leaving the key in the Lock position. Pull up the tab on the park lock cable and hook the wiring harness connectors (3) to the shifter assembly (1). Check if the shift lever is in Park, turn the adjustment screw to 30 Nm (265 inch lbs.), make sure the shifter is in Park and the key is Locked. Press down on the park lock cable adjustment tab to secure it, confirm the shifter, park lock and Btsi work smoothly and put the shield over the gearshift and park lock cables back in position, securing it with bolts to the shifter assembly. After that, position and secure any removed console parts after accessing the shift lever assembly and shift cables.
