Jeep Brake Drum Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Can Brake Drum Machining on a Drum Lathe Avoid Taper and Surface Variation on Jeep Wrangler?
    A:
When brake drums need machining, it is recommended on a drum lathe and the initial rough-machining cuts should not exceed 0.12 - 0.20 mm (0.005 - 0.008 inch) to avoid taper and variation, with finished cuts following at 0.025 to 0.038 mm (0.001 - 0.0015 inch) for a smooth surface. Set up the drum so it won't move during machining and always secure it with a damper strap to eliminate unwanted vibration and chatter. A stamp or cast mark shows the largest allowable diameter for the drum braking surface and the drum should be replaced if drilling causes it to go over that limit.
  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Brake Drum on Jeep Patriot?
    A:
You should first raise the vehicle, then remove the wheel nuts and the tire assembly and finally remove the brake drum. Loosen the brake drum against the wheel mounting studs of the hub and bearing and slide it off. When the drum won't come off, release brake pressure further by removing the plug from the rear of the support plate close to the wheel cylinder. Simple screwdriver in through the support plate and next to the lever pawl. As you press on the pawl with a screwdriver to release it from the wheel, turn the wheel upward using another screwdriver or the proper brake adjuster. Once you've loosened the adjuster screw enough, slowly remove the inner drum from the wheel mounting studs.
