The camshaft is mounted in four bearings, each one fixed into the cylinder block and line reamed, with each pair having its bores and diameters at 0.254 mm (0.010 inch) difference from front to rear, aiding in their removal and installation. Lubrication for camshaft bearings is handled by pressure systems and end play is supported by the thrust plate. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable, get the coolant out and save it in a tub and then take off the
Radiator and condenser if the car has air conditioning. In the following step, take out the engine cylinder head cover,
Rocker Arms, bridges, pivots, push rods, engine cylinder head and gasket, hydraulic valve tappets, vibration damper and timing case cover. Pull down the covering over the
Crankshaft chain, then rotate the crankshaft until both timing marks align. After that, take out the chain and sprockets, remove any
Bumper or
Grille that's in the way and remove the two screws holding the thrust plate and camshaft. Make sure the entire transmission's journals and bearings remain wear-free in addition to putting a watchful eye on the cam lobes and distributor drive gear. A camshaft that's rubbing on the thrust washer may have debris in the oil pressure relief holes at the rear of the cam journal. Wipe the outside diameter of the number 1 bearing clean before installing it in the engine block, making certain the oil hole fits over the oil gallery. Replace the old camshaft bearings using tool 8544 Camshaft Bushing Remover Installer and after that, install the camshaft by applying engine oil supplement. Be careful when installing the camshaft to not damage the bearings, set the thrust plate in place and use a torque wrench to tighten the retaining screws to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Lubricate the camshaft, add the camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and
Timing Chain and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt and washer to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Installation of the timing chain can be checked by making the crankshaft rotate two revolutions and adjusting the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket. Replace the oil seal on the timing case cover and then install it, along with the vibration damper, all the hydraulic valve tappets, with the cylinder head gasket facing up, cylinder head, push rods, rocker arms, pivot and bridge assemblies and finally the engine cylinder head cover. After the belt is installed, apply Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or equivalent to the valve tappets and all other valve components and let it stay with the engine oil for at least 1,609 km (1,000 miles). After that, put in the radiator, adjust the ignition timing when needed, fit the grille and bumper back if you took them off and link the battery's negative cable to the engine block.
