How to Service and Repair the Neutral Safety Switch in an AW-4 Automatic Transmission on Jeep Cherokee?

Before handling the Neutral Safety Switch on an AW-4 Automatic Transmission, lift the car and remove the connectors from the neutral safety switch wire harness. Pry the tabs of the washer lock open and eliminate the switch attaching nut and tabbed washer, then unscrew the switch adjusting bolt. Push the switch over to the manual side of the valve shaft. After that, remove the shift linkage rod from the shift lever on the left transmission side and move the manual shift lever rearward, then bring it forward two notches to Neutral. Put the manual valve switch on its shaft and only tighten the adjusting bolt finger tight, not all the way. Attach the tabbed washer to the manual valve shaft and secure the switch attaching nut with 6.9 Nm (61 inch lbs.) without pushing the washer's lock-tab over the nut. Shifting the gear into Neutral, rotate the switch until the standard line on the neutral position is aligned with the vertical groove on the shaft of the manual valve and another standard line is aligned with the flat or groove on the shaft. Screw the bolt onto the switch so it reaches 13 Nm (9 ft. lbs.) torque and stick over two lock tabs to secure the switch nut. Set the shift linkage rod back onto the shift lever in the left side of the case, connect the wires from the switches to the harness and slowly bring the vehicle to the floor. Make sure the engine will only start when the switch is placed into Park or Neutral.
