    Q: How to Replace a Faulty Clock Spring on Jeep Cherokee?
    A:
    Damaged, outdated or broken Clock Springs should be replaced and if the driver Air Bag has been deployed, it cannot be fixed. Make sure you disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery and wait two minutes before you begin any work. Make certain that the Steering Wheel is straight when the front wheels are aligned ahead. Take out the steering wheel air bag, unplug the upper Clock Spring wire harness connector if available and loosen the nut connecting the steering wheel armature to the upper shaft. Use a steering wheel puller (Special Tool C-3428-B) to unseat the steering wheel from the upper shaft spline, then take off the steering column opening cover from the instrument panel. Should your vehicle have a tilt steering column, lift it to its highest position, remove the three screws connecting the lower shroud to the upper one and if the shroud is not anti-theft, loosen the two nuts or lower the steering column. Get rid of both upper and lower steering column shrouds, unplug the two Clock Spring wires from the dashboard circuit and carefully pry the two edges of the Clock Spring assembly to free them from the upper steering panel housing. Should the plastic latches on the Clock Spring break, remove them from the upper section of the housing. Take the Clock Spring off of the steering column and if reusing, push a stiff wire through the small hole to lock the rotor to the case at about 11 o'clock. Remember to keep the front wheels in direct straight-ahead position, remove the wire that locks the rotor if replacing and slide the Clock Spring over the upper shaft after making sure the turn signal switch is in the middle. If a new Clock Spring goes in, release the pin on the rotor, join both wire connectors, put the columns in place and put in and tighten the three upper shroud screws to 2 Nm. Attach the Steering Column Cover and slip the steering wheel onto the shaft with proper positioning, then tighten the nut under it to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Do not pull on the wire harnesses while tightening the nut. If possible, attach the upper Clock Spring wire harness connector and only then return the driver air bag to the steering wheel.
