To remove the piston, remove the engine cylinder head cover first, after that take off the
Rocker Arms, bridges, pivots, push rods and finally the engine cylinder head. Remove each piston from the rod and, at the bottom of the stroke, use a ridge reamer to clean the top end of the cylinder's walls. Again, cover the cuttings with a protective cloth. Tip over the car and leave the engine as it is, then drain the oil before taking out the
Oil Pan and its gasket. Then, remove both the connecting rod bearing caps and the inserts and make sure to mark each cap and rod with the position of the cylinder bore, because the connecting rods and caps are stamped with a two-letter combo. Lower the engine until it is 2 feet above the floor, placing protective short hoses between the bolts and the engine's surfaces. Make someone push the piston and connecting rod assemblies up through the top of the cylinder bores. Prior to installation, wipe the inside of the cylinders with a clean cloth and apply a bit of clean engine oil. Replace the piston rings on the pistons and, as before, protect all metal surfaces with a layer of clean oil. After removing the camshaft, install the connecting rod and piston joints through the cylinder bores while pointing the piston's arrow to the engine's front. With the vehicle up again and with a matching bearing insert, carefully fit the bearing onto each journal to get the correct clearance from the connecting rod bearing fitting chart. There is a paint mark in a specific color on the adjacent cheek or counterweight next to the flange end of the crankshaft and the journal sizes are listed next to each color in the Connecting Rod Bearing Fitting Chart. Sometimes, different sized upper and lower bearing inserts are teamed up and a standard insert is used along with a smaller one to lower clearance by 0.013 mm (0.0005 inch). Don't mix up connecting rods and bearing caps, because the cylinder number is engraved on each cap near the squirt hole next to the camshaft in the cylinder block. Position the rod bearing caps and inserts exactly where they came from and make sure the holes for oil squirt are facing the camshaft and the pistons' arrows are at the front of the engine. Fit the oil pan and gaskets, raise the vehicle and attach the engine cylinder head, push rods, rocker arms, bridges, pivots and engine cylinder head cover. Finish by putting engine oil into the crankcase.
